Israel A Leader In Water Saving

12/20/2009 12:00:00 AM

Israel proves itself to be a world-leader in water-saving innovation at the Water Technologies, Renewable Energy and Environmental Control (WATEC) exhibition last month in Tel Aviv.

In response to ever-dwindling water supplies in Israel, the Israeli government announced last month that water prices will be rising by 40 percent starting next year, as part of an effort to reduce water usage.

Israelis, who have grown up with water-consciousness and scarcity will need to cut down further by recycling grey water and reducing their household water consumption, and there are many innovative new technologies to help with saving water.

It has been predicted that most of the agricultural water used in Israel will come from recycled waste water within three years, and by the year 2015 most drinking water in the country will be sourced from desalination.

The WATEC exhibition showcased some of the world’s best water-wise technology and ideas, including educational organisations such as the Ein Shemer Greenhouse Facility, which works with school children, scientists and business to develop projects to educate the younger generation on water issues.

A large number of hi-tech companies were exhibiting their innovations at the event, with many water-saving technologies on display. One such company, Emefcy, is working on a method of immersing electrodes into waste water, which then works to create energy from the waste. This means that water treatment plants will be able to run without any external electricity source, and the waste waster can be cleanly and efficiently treated to be used for agriculture and other uses.
