When settlers first arrived in the US and started carving up the land between themselves, the Native Americans didn't comprehend owning the land, putting up fences, they likened it to putting fences in the sky. The whole notion of ownership of Nature was alien to them and now the whole planet to us is a commodity. When it comes to people, it is hard to remember that we are all the same and that there is no separation, when nationality, patriotism, borders and passports define who we are. Do you still get riled up when your home football team are playing?

I think this is harder sometimes than being compassionate towards others - being compassionate towards yourself. If you take a step back and listen to the running commentary in your mind, you will notice how disrespectful you are of yourself, what awful things you think of yourself, what amazing ways we limit ourselves, with our 'shoulds', 'shouldnts', 'cant's' etc.

One thing I really want to start doing for myself is changing the stuck record in my mind.
What do y'all think?

peace

    Author: victoria
Subject: Respect?
Posted: 23 Mar 2010 at 11:20am

There is an interesting quote from Yogi Bhajan - master of Kundalini Yoga - he says 'If you can't see God in all, You can't see God at all.' this is a hard maxim to live by - because as often as I want to surrender to compassion, equally someone is pushing my buttons at the same time. Awareness is the key. Catching those moments when you are disrespectful of yourself, of others. Catching those times when you get triggered - most times, the words that someone else delivers are a reflection of one of our fears and that is why we react. Another of Yogi Bhajan's mantras is to learn to act, not react. We need to learn to come from a place of pure action - then we are not affected by someone wanting to provoke or upset us. We see the story for what it is, rather than getting caught up in it.

peace V
