Questions
Are our moods predictable? How about our sleepless nights? Our fearless, or bashful, moments? It is common to think that they are all arbitrary. "I don't know what came over me!" we often exclaim, and usually we really don't have a clue.
The Moon
Waxing and waning, the moon's absolute reliable predictability is change. We know exactly how the moon's variables will take place: two weeks of waxing, followed by two weeks of waning. The movement is constant, not one day is like the other.
Imperceptible at times, the expansion or contraction of the moon takes place continually, moment to moment. 29.5 days in all, the cycle of the moon repeats its dance monthly. A predictable changeability.
Are We connected To The Moon?
In more ways than we think! The moon, which rules all waters on planet Earth, tags on us too, pulling waters daily and monthly. Our human bodies, as you may recall from biology lessons in school, is comprised of 80% water. No wonder, than, that we are as susceptible to the ebbs and flow as the oceans are. Women even more so. The average length of a women's menstrual cycle is 29.5 days. Rings a bell, doesn't it?
We can live our lives oblivious to the push and pull of the moon, or in harmony with it.
The oblivious part, it seems, we have been practicing for a long time now, as individuals and especially in Western cultures. It doesn't seem to work too well, though, since we often experience no order in a chaotic and unpredictable world. What would it mean to live in harmony with the moon?
Observing The Moon
Watch the sky tonight and see where the moon is. If you can cup it with your right hand it is waxing. With your left - waning. Start observing your mood today; your ability to sleep well and deeply; your level of energy… You may want to keep a journal where you write your observations for a full moon cycle. It may be fun to draw the shape of the moon at the top of each entry in your journal.
Another way of charting the moon's movement is by referring to its four quarters: the week starting on the dark of the moon is known as the first quarter. The second week/quarter leads to the full moon. The waning starts on the third quarter/week, and the cycle completes on the fourth, leading back to the dark of the moon (also known as the new moon.)
Be attentive to, and note in your journal, the varying impressions, dreams, tempers, and frames of mind, as you and the moon cycle around. Don't try to interpret anything yet, but rather pay deep attention to the processes within you.
Relating To The Moon
When you have come full cycle, read your notes and start putting your inner puzzle together. Do you see a pattern emerging? What were your moods and dreams like during the waxing of the moon? Around the full moon? The dark of the moon?
I generally find that I am much more inclined to hibernate during the waning phase, and feel expansive and social during the waxing one.
I have been teaching myself to not only pay attention and recognize the effects that different phases have on me, but to actively plan my month to co-inside as much as possible with the phases, rather then collide with them.
Working With The Moon
Start taking the phase of the moon into account when you plan your activities. Where would you put your staff meetings? Your vacation? A party? A meeting with your boss? An intimate conversation with your mate about where is your relationship heading?
There are endless possibilities of weaving your activities so they match your moods and tendencies during different phases of the month. This is true for both men and women, though women may notice the effects of the moon more readily, since they menstruate monthly in accordance with it.
Plan as you may, the unpredictability of life tend to pop up regardless…but there is no need to panic. If a 'curved ball' is thrown to you by life, start by breathing, grounding, and asking yourself which phase are you, and the moon, going through right now?
I find that an unpleasant surprise throws me into a downward spiral if I am in an inward phase (waning moon, or menstrual cycle). Whereas I can take the same incident with a sense of humor, and let it roll off my back much easier, if I'm in an expanding, waxing time of the lunar cycle.
Though life's 'curved balls' are unpredictable, it helps to know why we are reacting the way we do. We can give ourselves some slack, and be more compassionate with ourselves, and others, when we have a deeper understanding of our inner workings as humans.
Going One Step Further
The more you get the hang of being in tune with the moon, the more fun you can have! How about arranging your wardrobe in four different sections, each with garments that match one of your monthly phases?
Look at all of your cloths and consider: which colors and designs would feel the most comfortable to wear when you are in a more inward-bound mood? Which colors will feel protective when they engulf you? Which will enhance your confidence? What accessories can contribute to this playful act of reflecting yourself accurately? The truer your outward reflection is, the more congruent you are. '
When you know yourself deeply, the external mirroring of your interior is a part of your unique dance of life.
