Eficient TV

The electronics industry has labeled January the television-buying month, when consumers scramble to get the top three flat and widescreen models in vogue – plasma, the liquid crystal display and the light-emitting diode TV’s.

Each of these models have different energy efficiency qualities. The plasma set is credited for having a smooth image feel, but it uses up more energy than the two other models. L.C.D. TV’s can work better in bright rooms because they have higher bright settings than plasmas.
However, the L.E.D. model is said to be the most energy-efficient because it can be lighted by numerous little light-emitting diode lights instead of a fluorescent lamp.
In time with the buying frenzy, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority released tips on how to choose the most energy-efficient TV set.

Tips

First, consumers must look for televisions that bear the Energy Star label, a sure sign that the unit will consume around 40 percent less energy than others, the agency said.

They should also choose the right television size for their room to optimize energy savings and for best viewing.
A TV set that is too large for the room wastes energy and can strain the eyes scanning the entirety of the wide screen from left to right. But while a small screen can save energy, it can also stress the eyes as they try to get the details from the screen.
Consumers must also lower brightness settings to cut power by as much as half since, the New York agency said, there is only a minor difference in picture quality at 60 percent brightness versus 100 percent.

More Power?

They can also connect their TV’s to an advanced power strip which can eliminate standby power loss –consumption of energy even just when the TV is plugged in and not being used. The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory says 10 percent of yearly household energy consumption comes from products that consume energy through the standby power feature.

Governments worldwide are already lobbying to pass energy efficiency laws for TV’s.
