 Around We Go

Every action has a reaction. This is the universal law of karma. All across the East people believe that what you sow, you reap. “My actions are my only true belongings,” says Thich Nhat Hanh. And isn’t it true that our deeds determine us as much as determine our deeds? If I act with courage, I am a brave person. If you read this article, you will hopefully be reminded that we all have the power to create effect, and this is because we are all one.

We Create Our Own Reality

I just watched ‘The Secret’ this weekend. I thought I knew it all, having watched it twice when it first came out. But I found myself being once more jolted awake as those spiritual superstars revealed the law of attraction. And that law is not so different from karma. We are the directors of our own lives and we decide what movie to be in, no matter the situations around us.

Both Karma and the law of attraction agree that every thought, every action has its consequence. That’s why we need to be aware and mindful. Awareness can bring material and spiritual success, but it can guide us towards right actions.

When I first discovered the joy of meditation I would sit quiet and breathe even in public places. Waiting for my order in the local sushi café, I would shut my eyes and go within. On the beach it felt more normal to meditate and in my office – Essence Of Life – it’s actually encouraged. But what really amazed me about meditating is the effect that It had on my surroundings.

Where it was busy and noisy when I closed my eyes, it was always quieter around me when I opened them. And it got me thinking how much more powerful would it be if we all took moments of quiet together.

I know I am not the first to think this thought. Numerous simultaneous global events have shown us how much can be achieved when people do the same thing at the same time, whether it’s praying for rain or walking for rights.

And What About The Environment?

With the environment in the state it is, It is vital to take responsibility for the products we consume and the resources we use - no matter our country. My neighbor laughs at me unplugging the TV every time I finish using it, but I follow Gandhi’s words, “be the change you want to see in the world”.

My friend Vicky is a real eco fiend. Somebody once asked her why she makes her life harder by walking on the coral reef at the Red Sea without shoes. “If we all conquer the coral reef, one day there may not be any reef left for our children to enjoy“, she answered.

Sometimes when the tide is out, Vicky can’t get to the water but those who have plastic shoes can march right over the coral, crushing any life there, and arrive at the water, even though Nature says tide is out, sun is high, go rest in the shade.

As the Native American proverb goes, “we do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children”. We can’t live only for ourselves. Wake up to the karma of your actions and believe that together we can make a difference.
