Nuit, Goddess Of The Night
Stare up at the night sky - go beyond the darkness, the velvety black, see beyond every star - this is the essence of limitlessness - Nuit (also Nut,) the Goddess of the Cosmos, Goddess of endless possibility…
In Egyptian mythology, Nuit is the Sky Queen with a cloak of stars. She swallows the sun every evening and gives birth to it every morning.
She is the dark of the night and yet also the mother of the Sun. Naturally her name, Nuit forms the word ‘night' in many languages. She is often shown completely naked, her body represented by a constellation of stars arching over the world.
Rebirth
She becomes the enveloping night, but light is reborn with the rising of the sun each morning, so she also represents resurrection. She inspires us to flow, to change, to shapeshift, to be reborn.
When we honour Goddess Nuit, we can be reborn to follow our own divine plan. Whenever we hesitate, whenever we waiver, she helps us remember who we are as she shines her light on us.
"We may think that consciousness is invisible, but we only need to look around us - at the structure of our cities, the contents or our bookshelves - to see the incredible versatility of consciousness in its manifested form." Anodea Judith
Sunrise And Sunset
She is the light as the stars prick the sky and the warmth of the sun born in the dawn… Meditate on her as the sun rises and when the first stars shine in the sky. These are the magical times of day - the quality of the air is tangibly different - there is a different vibration.
In many religions, the dawn and sunset are the most auspicious times of day for prayer, meditation and contemplation. These are times when the veil seems thinnest between the physical and spiritual worlds. I think it is a time when we can tap into cosmic memory or collective unconscious.
"The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.
Don't go back to sleep.
You must ask for what you really want.
Don't go back to sleep." (Rumi)
Meditate On Space
Nuit is also connected to space. Meditate on her when you want to feel space in your life. If you feel overburdened, pushed and shoved, focus on Nuit, the stars. Imagine in your mind's eye limitless space, let it relax you, let it pervade you.
Enter a realm of neutral space, where you go beyond judgment, beyond fear, beyond stories. Often when we meditate at our third eye, when we drop into neutral space (neither positive mind nor negative mind, but a zone of neutrality) it is as dark as the night sky when there is no moon.
Enjoy the darkness, but remember the light. Sure as day, Nuit will give birth to the Sun. The change from day to night, night to day happens with ease and we should embrace change in the same way. When we embrace change, we open up to infinite possibilities. Let Nuit support you, when you feel fear or when you judge yourself, let her shine her light on the mystery of life and just enjoy the light show.
Goddess Of Connection
Nuit is also the Goddess of bliss and cosmic connection and so when we work on our crown chakra, we tune into her energies. Cosmic connection is about trust. When we do not trust ourselves, the world at large, we cut ourselves off from universal messages. When the crown chakra is in balance, we can feel as if we are bathed in cosmic light, we feel clearer, more focused, more in tune…
Anita Revel suggests the following affirmations to connect to the energies of Nuit:
I am an indivisible whole
I am charged with cosmic energy
I am in control of my destiny
I am one with humanity
I am connected with the cosmic source
She also suggests making a blend of Sandalwood, Patchouli, Rosewood, Neroli and Clary Sage to enhance your meditation on Nuit.
Surrender
Deep relaxation is the key to tuning into ourselves and tuning into Nuit. When we relax, we are beyond fear, we are beyond doubt and we surrender to universal wisdom. We trust in the universe to guide us.
"The concept of surrender is fundamental to all religions and a goal of all spiritual paths," says Guru Rattana Kaur. "The idea is that we release control, get our mind trips out of the way and let the universe take charge. Surrender recognizes that our limited perceptions of what we think we want and need and how to satisfy our desires are limited, and that cosmic forces are more intelligent and efficient in producing results."
Silent meditation or traktakum (gazing at a lit candle or into the eyes of the photograph of a teacher/master) is a good way of entering a state of deep relaxation.
You may find it easier to do some form of yoga or dance before sitting in stillness. Nuit is often depicted as a gateway between heaven and earth - her hands and feet are firmly planted in the earth, while her body arches into the sky.
Meditation Exercise
Feel grounded as you sit in meditation, feel as if you have roots going into the earth. Feel the strength of the earth beneath you, feel her strength support your spine. The more supported you feel through the earth, the more you can grow towards the light.
Turn your attention towards the crown of your head and feel light pour into you like a waterfall. Feel the energies of the earth and the heavens meet in your heart.
