The Goddess Lilith boldly instructs us to stand up for what we believe in, unbridled and courageous no matter what the cost. Anita Revel
Some see Lilith as the first feminist – she predates Eve and is made equal to Adam from dust, not a rib. When he climbs on top of her to consummate their relationship, she objects. Why should she not be on top?
“'We are equal to each other inasmuch as we were both created from the earth.' But they would not listen to one another. When Lilith saw this, she pronounced the Ineffable Name and flew away into the air.”
The Portrayal Of Lilith
From then on throughout myth and the stories of ages, Lilith is portrayed as prostitute, demoness, temptress and attacker of male children (who are only safe once they have been circumsized).
Almost erased from history in favour of Eve, Lilith has been demonized, much as wise women and witches have been burned at the stake.
Popular amongst Jewish folklore, Lilith turns up in the Middle Ages as the demon wife of Asmodeus residing in Yenne Velt (Other World). Together they wreak havoc, turning wine into vinegar, creating demonic offspring and causing men to be impotent. Lilith was the demoness blamed for the loss of infant life.
This dark energy that surrounds Lilith is similar to the worship of the Hindu Goddess Kali – yet Kali is the ultimate mother. She creates life and she takes it away. She destroys the ego and asks us to surrender to the Divine.
Lilith As Hebrew Mother Goddess
Getting back to the roots of Lilith, we see her as a Babylonian or Hebrew mother goddess of childbirth, children, women, and sexuality. Why was Lilith demonized? And is it time to reclaim her power?
Once women were honoured as the Goddess, priestess, healer, and wise woman… and then a whole shift in consciousness took place and as we shifted into a patriarchal society, women were denounced as the virgin or the whore.
Female healers were seen as witches dwelling in the energy of the dark moon. Women were forced to hide their sensuality and their sexuality, their creativity and passions. History would have women playing a supporting role on the planet, not a lead one.
Lilith Stands For Wisdom And Courage
Lilith is an aspect of ourselves that we need to honour. She fights for equality. She fights to be heard. She can shine a light on intolerance and inequality. Whenever we feel intolerant ourselves or we see intolerance in others, we can remember Lilith.
Lilith is about going beyond judgement and intolerance – she embodies an archaic feminine strength that goes beyond patriarchal regimes. Just like the Goddess Kali, Lilith is a force that affirms life.
Using Lilith In Your Life
Make a list of what makes you intolerant – what pushes your buttons. What can you do about them? Can you confront them? Can you change the energy around the issues and create positive change? Can you forgive yourself when you are intolerant?
Lilith is the energy of will power and inner strength. Whenever you need to focus in your life and tap into your own source of strength you can call on Lilith. Lilith asks us to stand up for what we believe in. You can capture her energy with the stones like tourmaline, tigers eye and amber.
The Dark Moon is often called Lilith. You can meditate on her at this time – she will help you get past your ego and see your true essence. She shows us where we can let go of things that are holding us back.
Dark Moon Lilith is often employed in astrological chart readings – Black Moon Lilith is when the Moon is at its furthest point from the Earth. Like acknowledging our ascendant, or rising sign, knowing where Lilith is in our chart can help us understand our full astrological make-up.

“The Dark Moon shows where we question ourselves, our lives, our jobs, and our beliefs” says Joëlle de Gravelaine in Astrologie Heute (Astrology Today),
She adds, “I feel this is important, since it gives us the opportunity to "let go" of something. The Dark Moon shows where we can let the Whole flow into our selves, without putting an "I" in the way, without putting up a wall in the form of ego…To prepare us for this opening, the Dark Moon creates a necessary void."
To tap into the energy of the solar plexus and go beyond your ego, you can try the Ego Eradicator exercise from Kundalini Yoga.
Bring your arms up to the sides at 60 degrees. Your thumb sticks up while the rest of your fingers touch the venus mound, or top part of your hand. As you hold this mudra (hand position) you start breath of fire. Breath of Fire melts away the ego – you do it by breathing in and out of the nose.
As you breathe out, you pull your navel in towards the spine – pushing the air out. As you breathe in, your navel and belly relaxes. Keep focusing on the navel, grounding the breath in the belly. Do this for two minutes. It can re-energize you and free yourself of ego restrictions. Breathing or pranayama can help us connect to our true self.
