 The Third Eye Chakra

The third eye chakra is the mystical and meditative doorway through the chakra system and it is through this meditative and mystic understanding of the universe - that glimpse of what lies beyond us (or deep within us) - that we can find clarity.

For some clarity and logic are on the other side of the scales to mysticism - the eternal argument of science versus spirituality. However a true mystic understands the universe in all its essence.

The third eye chakra is the gateway to higher perception.

Bringing our awareness to the third eye charka is extremely balancing - bringing into harmony the right and left hemispheres of the brain, logic and creativity, masculine and feminine, action and dreamtime… when we bring together these different aspects of ourselves, these seemingly opposite sides of the coin, we become empowered - our dreams become manifest, we follow a path of right action, we are present, balanced and whole.

The third eye chakra is sometimes known as the Orb of the Moon Chakra - it is a place for reflection and contemplation.

Over the years we have lost touch with the power of dreamtime and ignored the wisdom, signs and symbols that come from our dreams and visions; we have denied the clairvoyance and inner vision that is the seat of our higher wisdom, in favour of logic and reason.

Opening the third eye chakra and operating from this realm of inner wisdom requires living as pure insight - trusting in yourself and the universe. Trusting and listening to the messages both within and outside - microcosm and macrocosm.

The logical mind is a great player in the action of our lives, and often the logical mind wants to take centre stage and play the lead - it will come in and judge. It judges our dreams, our intuition, our instinct. It makes us doubt our visions and dreams. We have preconceptions about meditative experience and judgements about mystical experience.

Really operating from the realm of the sixth chakra means that we start "to see the unseen and know the unknown" according to Yogi Bhajan, the master of Kundalini Yoga.

The pituitary gland or master gland is the seat of our intuition and the root of the third eye. Working on the pituitary gland not only balances the body and the hormonal and glandular systems, but enhances our intuition.

The sixth chakra is a place from which to set goals and align them with our dreams. Our intentions are incredibly powerful as we fuel them with brain power, for instance, the more we think about something the more we attract it to us - positive or negative.

The sixth chakra is a place of positive projection - to put inspired thoughts out for the universe to make manifest. When we focus our awareness at the third eye, we are putting the wheels in motion for our lives. We put the idea out there and let it direct us. It is where we start to see our life’s work - the divine plan.

Yogi Bhajan says that "intuitive projection and intuition reception have the strength of guarding you - they are your guardian angels."  Our guardian angels are not outside of ourselves, but deep within. They are our innate wisdom - that’s where the guidance comes from.

"We unnecessarily go on seeking advice from the outside when existence is ready to speak to us from the innermost core of our being," says Osho. "It is already there, but we never listen to that still, small voice."

We live in a noisy world, internally (mind) and externally (the world at large, media, friends, family etc.), we are constantly digesting thoughts, habits, opinions, judgements and preconceptions. The art of insight is to go into stillness, beyond the noisiness.

The gateway to the third eye chakra is meditation and conversely the gateway to meditation and transformation is the third eye chakra.

Often when we meditate, we focus our awareness at the third-eye point - it becomes the most natural place to relax in meditation. When we meditate we create a space for transformation.

According to Yogi Bhajan we are of three minds - positive, negative and neutral mind.

One of the goals of the meditative techniques in Kundalini Yoga is to tune into the neutral mind, where we can access higher states of consciousness. If we try to be silent without accessing our neutral channel, silent meditation often gets stuck in watching our thoughts and replaying our neuroses.

Coming into the neutral space goes beyond past and present and transports us into the totality of the moment. This is the launchpad for our own empowerment and transformation.

Try this Meditation for Intuitive Projection

Sit in easy pose. Close the eyes and start moving your arms as if you were swimming, like doing the crawl stroke. Start by losing yourself in the movement, pulling your arms back and forth powerfully. Then visualize yourself in the ocean, a long way from land and you have to get to the shore ahead of you. Keep swimming, keep moving, powerful breath fuelling you.

Lose yourself in the powerful movement, lose yourself in the breath and keep visualizing from the third eye the land ahead of you. You don’t know how you are going to make the shore, but you trust your intuition, you see in your mind’s eye yourself reaching the shore, the relief, the relaxation that will follow - this fuels the meditation. Keep seeing it like a movie screen in front of you, the land gets closer and closer the more you move, the more you breathe.

Keep going for eleven minutes! Play loud positive, empowering mantra music to help you…
