In these days many people are using tarot or healing cards in order to inspire and guide them in their lives, in the present moment.
Though traditional tarot readings may involve future telling and reading the past accurately, the abundance and popularity of different types of tarot cards has ignited in many the desire to use the wisdom on their favourite pack of cards like an all knowing friend giving sound advice.
Some of us like to pick a card every morning and carry the card's message with us throughout the day, others of us will consult the cards in a time of confusion or decision making. For many it can just be a fun thing to do - to make a reading, also called a 'spread,' for ourselves or a friend.
Most decks come with a book to help you understand the picture and words on the cards but intuition and feeling play an important role in interpreting the card you draw.
You may pick a card that immediately reminds you of something or someone, or you have some sort of gut feeling that such a card comes to bring such a message. It's difficult to give yourself a reading - because you need to be impartial - that's why to receive a reading from an honest stranger is all the better.
At Essence of Life we have created The Dolphin Within Me Cards - 78 illustrated cards with positive messages. In this article I will introduce you to 2 cards and show you how you can work with them, by example, to reflect on your life and see yourself and your issues more clearly.
Debbie is a dynamic and organized married mother of three children, working in a media company as a secretary and organizer for a team of eight people. When she picked a card from the Dolphin deck, her professional life was on her mind. Her question - How can I move forward in my career?
The first card that Debbie picked with her left hand (which connects to the intuitive right side of the brain) is entitled Planning One Step Ahead.
We both smiled at the appropiateness of Debbie picking a card that concerns work and the practical realms. Here in the picture is a dolphin looking at a planning board in which he sees himself moving forwards.
There are two significant points that came to mind for both of us, when we saw this card. Firstly that's it about making a plan. Even if, as Debbie complains, you feel stuck at work (or in any other aspect of your life) the first thing you need to do is unstuck yourself by making a plan.
Write down where you want to see yourself in the next few weeks, months or years. Rather than focusing on your boredom, frustration or feeling of lack, take time to reflect on what you want to bring into your life, commit your desires to paper, write a wish list and continually refer to it, until your
intentions manifest.
And remember it's only about planning one step ahead - not two or more. When we are crossing over rocks by the sea, in order to get to our destination and not fall down, we look at each rock that we are about to cross one by one.
This metaphor can be used for life - if you are so focused on your destination, you may miss important preparations on the journey to your goal. Going step by step, you may find that as you achieve one step, the next step changes or even becomes irrelevant.
So it's important to plan - to visualize in order to materialize - but it's also important to stay in the moment and not to plan too far ahead.
Debbie liked the idea of writing down what she wanted from her career because she admitted that she was so busy moaning about her present situation, she hadn't allowed time to consider what she did want from her
job!
She knew she had to take her life in her hands, be the
creator of her own life script and stop resenting others who were taking charge of their lives. But still she was wondering - how, even with a plan in hand giving her hope for a more professionally satisfying future, could she manage her reality as it is NOW.
And so she picked another card. The message read Accepting Others With Love. Finding Debbie to be a loving and caring person, I presumed this card was like a mirror, showing her one of her gifts - to be able to embrace others, no matter whether the person is a boss or a cleaner. However Debbie hesitated when she saw the card.
"You know what," she confided to me, "I do have to learn to love everyone in this company. I do sometimes allow my judgements of who I like, who I don't like, to cloud my work and effect me."
Accepting others is not just about being more loving and therefore giving more to another - it's about loving yourself more; understanding that any negative feelings towards another actually causes negativity within yourself.
Perhaps the root of Debbie's desire to move on professionally was actually her dissatisfaction with her present job. And it seemed from the reaction to her second card that her dissatisfaction was largely personal.
Seeing the best in everyone and accepting the different characters and methods of working within her company, could allow Debbie to see her workplace as another home centre, from which, no matter whether she is making coffee or in an important meeting, it's not what you do but how you do it, not who you work with but how you work with them.
And, like the red heart shaped fish in this card, love is most definitely the
essence.
